Surprise your fiancé by leaving early and arriving home late and squeezing in an entertaining fun adventure in between. Here is a perfect idea for a romantic day away.

Hog Island Oysters, Point Reyes – This one-of-a-kind family owned and operated sustainable shellfish company, located in Napa (Oxbow Public Market) and San Francisco (Ferry Building) has merged the art of raising quality seafood with customer-direct high quality food service. However, this ultimate farm-to-plate oyster experience offers a unique experience at their Oyster Farm on Highway One along the Sonoma Coast, in the town of Marshall. www.hogislandoysters.com

Eat:

Hog Island raises Pacific (aka Hog Island Sweetwater), Kumamoto and Atlantic oysters as well as Manila Clams and Mussels all farmed in the beautiful, clean waters of Tomales Bay, CA. The farm offers to-go oyster sales and a seaside picnic area. Make a reservation in advance, especially for the weekends, and you will be provided with a bay-side picnic table and grill. You can bring your own grill-friendly foods and pick up hot sauce, a local barbeque sauce, mesquite charcoal briquettes, and ice from the farm. Stop by to belly up to the oyster bar with no-reservation where they also serve beer and wine.

Do:

Besides driving the scenic Hwy One explore the Point Reyes Lighthouse and hike the Chimney Rock Trails in the area. Most hiking in the area offers breath-taking Pacific Ocean views and are moderately easy. www.nps.gov

Stay to watch the splendid sunset along the blue endless Pacific Ocean. Not only is it romantic but a must-see for any couple together. www.sunrisesunset.com

Saturday June 26, 2010

Perfect timing: a lunar eclipse and SF Pride, all on the same day! Ready for some changes? I sure am! Antibride.com has been a longtime supporter of gay marriage since the the first book in the 3-book Anti-Bride was published in 2002. You’ve got to love Chronicle Books for having the guts, sense of fairness, and open mind to get behind what was then, and is still considered to be, a touchy topic in the White House and beyond. As a publishing firm, they are fearless and peerless. Gay culture has informed, improved, uplifted and changed arts, culture, and society at large, here and across the globe. Many of the issues, laws, and the sea change in public opinion towards gay rights, the right to marry, and health care happened right here in SF – bellwether of change. Check out my latest article in Drink Me Magazine, A Historical Look at Gay Bars: Cultural Politics in a Glass, in this months Issue, Colors, in celebration of Pride.

It is with great pride that I celebrate Pride with some good friends, old and new starting with Dyke March later today in Dolores Park, the Parade tomorrow (check out uber fabulous Bevan Dufty’s float at the parade! We’re voting for him for SF Mayor) and ending most likely at some TBD after party in the Castro.

Some compatriots of note with whom I will be canoodling at Elena’s Pink Diamond Party in the Castro before Dyke March: Melissa Comito-Aakre, our Heavy Petal floral blogger, who just took the Top Wedding Flowers award, Best of the Bay SF Chronicle/SF Gate, the inimitable Irvin Lin, our spanking new food blogger: Eat the Love, and his equally talented boyfriend, A.J. Bates of Marquis Photo SF (bridal portraits, anyone?). The only regret is that I can’t hang with my super buddies and Anti-Bride Two Brides bloggettes, Stacy-Jill and Melissa, newlyweds and founders of Queerlywed.com.

One thing remains clear, straight or gay, it is with pride that we celebrate SF Pride. Let the cartoons begin!

Details

Excerpted from the Official SFPride.org website

San Francisco Pride has been said to be “one of the last remaining pride events that can truly be called a rite of passage.” 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade.

The event will be held over the weekend of June 26 and 27, 2010 in the Civic Center of downtown San Francisco.
With over 200 parade contingents, 300 exhibitors, and 19 stages and venues, the San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration and Parade is the largest LGBT gathering in the nation.

The San Francisco Pride Celebration is packed with a wide variety of exhibitors, artists, music of all kinds, performers, dance stages and venues, and fun. There really is something here for everyone.

The Celebration at Civic Center is host to our Main Stage where in 2009 Asian pop sensation BoA wowed Pride-goers with new beats alongside Solange Knowles and the Cliks and where in 2008, attendees saw Lady Gaga, Margaret Cho, Kat DeLuna, Inaya Day, Crystal Waters, speakers from the marriage equality movement, and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, among others.
2010 Event Themes.

The event theme for the 40th annual San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade was selected by Pride’s Membership. Acknowledging the need for celebration in the wake of Prop 8, the membership selected “Forty and Fabulous” from a slate of 51 potential themes, each submitted by community members and members of Pride. Member Richard Kravitz, who submitted the winning theme, explained his submission, “I thought that we needed something fun. Last year, I told Executive Director Lindsey Jones that the theme for next year should be ‘Forty and Fabulous.’ She said to submit it, and so I did.”
FREE Admission

The San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee takes very seriously its commitment to maintaining an event that is open to people of all economic backgrounds.? Your generosity at the entrances to the Celebration in the form of donations helps keep San Francisco Pride free to all members of the community and provides crucial support to this important community event.? Our donations program also helps to support over eighty Bay Area non-profit organizations through our Community Partners Program. Donations from the celebration have helped San Francisco Pride to give back more than $1.6 million in grants since 1997.? With your help, we can do even better this year and invest in our community’s future.? Join us for two days of music, food and fun… all for FREE! No tickets are needed and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

To say that Melissa Comito-Akare is merely a florist is like saying the Coco Chanel was a hat designer. Infusing new and eclectic ideas in flowers, design, lighting, décor, table-scapes, point of view, and ambiance, and really getting to the heart of who a couple is, is what Melissa and her company, A Simple Ceremony, does best. Whether you are an eco-chic vegan couple or rock and roll royalty Melissa has the design know how, historical references and the resources to turn on the juice. This wunderkind got her start in Beverly Hills working with celebrities such as Jane Seymour, Bette Midler, Joan Rivers, and Barry Manilow; and companies such as Pixar, and George Lucas. Her work has been featured in several magazines including Martha Stewart and Grace Ormand. Her inspiration comes to her in random ways: a building, a pattern on a skirt, the color of a sunset, a trip to Home Depot, a stack of vintage Tarot cards, a mad scientists laboratory. If you have a dream for an event that must be expressed and created down to the detail, Melissa is the girl for the job like no one we’ve yet seen.<a href="http://%20www.asimpleceremony.com./" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview("/outbound/article/ www.asimpleceremony.com.");" target="_blank" class="liexternal"> <a href="http://asimpleceremony.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview("/outbound/article/asimpleceremony.com");" target="_blank" class="liexternal">www.asimpleceremony.com.

Ready to go the distance beyond the traditional 2 over easy with hash browns? Willing to wow your palate with a shot of Asian comfort food that’s just a hop, skip and a jump from your crib in the Mish? Do you have issues with an icy Sapporo or warm sake for breakfast instead of coffee? Want to be dining alongside of the Missions hipster crowd: culture vultures always in search of the next cool thing? Looking for a brunch experience that promises to delight your senses (and your wallet) look no further than Nombe, the Japanese comfort food Mecca on Mission Street.

Chef Nicolaus Balla creates magic, featuring the Japanese breakfast above. This is a feast consisting of broiled black cod, steamed Koshihikari rice with wild nori seaweed, miso soup, house made pickles, onsen tomago (slow cooked egg), a salad with ume dressing, and sliced fruit. The accompaniments change weekly pending on seasonal availability but it has been quite a crowd pleaser so far. The brunch menu also features ramen with a pint of Sapporo for 13.00, grilled wagyu bavette steak and eggs, donburi dishes (rice bowls), an insane plate of French toast (with almond syrup, creme fraiche, shaved chocolate and berries), salads, their famous wings and even sashimi. The bloody mary is divine, but there are also – unique non alcoholic beverages such as matcha and milk iced tea.

So if you’ve decided that one more western omelette will send you to the rubber room, or you and your sweetie would like to wake up to something a bit more sublime, run, do not walk to Nombe, and be a part of the alternative brunch coalition.

Sip, Soar or Surf! Kick off your own Spring Fling by whisking your beloved away for a romantic getaway. Each getaway evokes romance, sunshine essentials and a sense of adventure – perfect for any couple hoping to switch relationship gears.

San Ynez Valley: Wine Tasting

Take a long weekend and drive the five hours to Santa Barbara’s Wine Country. Rolling green hills, large oak trees and vineyard landscapes are reminiscent of Napa Valley but with an urban cowboy feel. Ranching and wine drinking make this valley unique. Los Olivos is a picturesque three-block town filled with wine tasting rooms, upscale dining establishments and a local general store where you can drink beer out front (if the urge occurred). Stay at the Fess Parker, Wine Country Inn & Spa in the center of town and choose from a variety of wine tasting packages, including my ideal getaway; Ride, Wine & Dine. However, three of my favorite wineries are Foley Wines, Bridelewood Estate Winery and Kaylara Winery. Dine at Petros, the excellent Greek restaurant inside Fess Parker or enjoy a western meal at A.J Spurs, where the best steak and chili beans are served along with live country music. www.fessparker.com

San Diego: Hot-Air Ballooning

Instead of booking a flight to Spain, save the money and feel as if you are in Spain at the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. Colorful tiles, majestic fountains and bright bougainvillea add to the hotel’s distinction. It’s a place where many visit and want to return as a newlywed. The romantic atmosphere, ocean views and close proximity to La Jolla Cove makes La Valencia the ideal winter retreat. Forget Southern California traffic, everything you need is within walking distance. Even the hot-air balloon company, Sky Surfer, will pick you up at the hotel for an Ocean View Sunset ride. Afterwards, pick up to-die-for fish tacos from Georges and hang out at their open-air upstairs bar sipping margaritas. Shop, take long walks along the beach and don’t forget to pack your flip-flops. www.lavalencia.com

Santa Cruz: Surfing

Santa Cruz and Capitola, a two hour drive from Napa, is also a bumbling eccentric community. For the more adventuresome couple, take advantage of Pleasure Point Inn’s Room & Board Surf Package. Wetsuits, semi-private surf lessons and surfboards are provided by Club Ed Surf School. Plus, two nights away at the inn are included. After your surfing lessons grab brunch at 515 Kitchen & Cocktails by the fireplace on the upstairs patio. For dinner, rather after dinner at Chocolate, located in the heart of Santa Cruz share the ‘chocolate orgy’ dessert (they have a variety of mind-blowing desserts). If surfing is not in the cards for you, then consider giving kayaking a try. Rent a kayak at Capitola Boat and Bait shop located on the Capitola wharf. www.pleasurepointinn.com

Hey Anti-Brides, tired of returning that vase you’ll never use, or the gravy boat that will wallow in obscurity? Want to make sure that those wedding presents actually go to work for you? Here is a fantastic wedding registry that gets you closer to what you really want, a house (not just stuff to put in it. Read on!
From Erin-Marie MacEwen, Founder

Beep. Click. Beep. Click. Click. Scannnnn. Beep. Click. Click. Scannnnnn. Beep. Click. Oh, the sounds of a traditional retail wedding registry. I remember it like yesterday. Walking into Macy’s in downtown San Francisco, it felt like we were embarking on a shopping spree. Who can argue with the fun that comes with that? I can tell you, it was fun. But, was it practical? Was it fun for the moment and frustrating to deal with afterward? Was it confusing and completly overwhelming? Absolutely.

My now-husband and I registered at a few places for our wedding. Being part of a large, traditional family it was important that we registered in the traditional way – at a retail store. Some guests simply prefer to give a physical gift, so for the few things we really needed – a duvet cover – it was great. For the things we didn’t necessarily need, well … it was confusing. Do we register for china and crystal because we’re ‘supposed’ to? Do we register for things just for fun, for things that we don’t need? Can we return gifts later if we decide they don’t work in our home?

Luckily, out of this confusion came a bit of clarity. When we really thought about it, what would be helpful for us was money towards down payment on a home. It’s been a lifelong dream of ours to have a home of our own, so any help towards that dream was a dream in and of itself. The problem was that it wasn’t very fun to tell guests we wanted cash towards a home. In fact, it was a little awkward and felt a little rude. To help alleviate this problem, we asked ourselves, how could we make this fun? After brainstorming a bit, we came up with Hatch My House– an online, interactive registry to help us – and other couples – save towards a home.

Map out your future dream home.

Hatch My House enables couples to create a visual representation – a picture – of their future home. Using this picture, wedding guests donate towards the couples’ house fund by purchasing a part of that house, such as a window, the front door or even a set of wineglasses. Guests get to have fun while donating and couples get to design, visualize – and hopefully realize – their ‘dream’ home.

Hatch My House ended up being the perfect solution to our wedding registry dilemma. By using it as our wedding registry, we were able to save a few thousand dollars towards our future home. We’re hopeful that you’ll be able to save as we did, so please check out the details – How It Works and Benefits – as outlined below.

HOW IT WORKS
•To set up a registry on Hatch My House, couples first write a welcome note to their guests describing the goal of the house fund in Step 1.
•In step 2, they customize their ‘dream’ house, selecting their desired setting, style – craftsman or brownstone (with more on the way) – and color.
•Couples finalize their registry in step 3 by linking their new or existing PayPal account to HMH. By completing a simple form verifying their PayPal email, they’re ready for step 4 – to publish their registry.
•In step 4 couples pay a one-time sign up fee of $24.95 to publish their registry and get directed to their personalized URL link.
•By copying this link, in step 5, they direct family members and friends to their registry – and start saving towards a home immediately!

BENEFITS
By using Hatch My House, couples take advantage of PayPal, reaping the benefits of being aligned with a 10-year money transfer service business and a built-in security infrastructure, which includes data encryption and fraud prevention tools.

They also benefit from lower transaction fees in comparison to other online gift and down payment registries. Hatch My House is one of the few online registries that offers a 0% to 3% transaction fee.

Not only that, but by using Hatch My House, couples get to benefit from an easy-to-use, convenient online registry without any hassles!

• No shipping charges!
• No sales tax!
• No parking fees!
• No long hours spent scanning items at the store!
• No returns!
• No hassles!

As a special thanks to Antibride, we’re offering anyone who signs up this week a 20% discount. Sign up HERE and use the coupon code: ANTIBRIDE.

About Hatch My House

Erin-Marie recently discovered Antibride.com. She wished she had known about Carolyn’s awesome site and books when she was a bride as it would have helped her navigate through the confusion of the ‘traditional registry’. Luckily, she and her now-husband got clarity when they developed Hatch My House, an online wedding registry where anyone can save towards a home in a fun and interactive way. Using Hatch My House for their wedding registry, they were able to save a few thousand dollars towards their future home. Now, they hope to give others the same opportunity by launching Hatch My House for public use (as of Dec. 2010).

San Francisco, CA (April 14, 2010) – Beginning on Thursday, April 15, the Top of the Mark at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins kicks off the search for the most romantic marriage proposal made at the legendary sky lounge. Since opening in 1939, hundreds of couples have proclaimed their love at this famed destination. Whether you were engaged as the sun set behind the city or popped the question over late night cocktails with the twinkling lights of San Francisco as the backdrop, the Top of the Mark wants to hear your story and see your photo.

Through June 15, 2010, couples from around the country are asked to share their fairytale proposal with the Top of the Mark. Selected stories will be playfully featured on the cocktail napkins at the lounge, inspiring romantic proposals for generations to come. The couple with the most remarkable story will receive a romantic weekend getaway for two at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins.

Perched on the 19th floor of the hotel, the world-renowned sky lounge affords a near 360-degree vista of San Francisco with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. These views combined with evening entertainment, a menu of 100 martinis and light bites have made the Top of the Mark one of the most romantic destinations in the Bay Area and one of the top for popping the question to that special someone.

Submissions can be emailed to gail.gerber@ihg.com or mailed to the attention of Gail Gerber at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins, One Nob Hill, San Francisco, CA 94108.
Anti-Brides and Destination I Do readers, if you are anywhere in or around the Bay Area, run do not walk to the SF Vintners Market today again, at Fort Mason. Cornelius Geary co-founder of Wine 2.0 and creator of this one of a kind wine event, was kind enough to extend a press pass to the Reserve Area, for myself and and my compatriot, Clarissa Nicosia. We met wonderful new friends such as Pushback winemaker Nick Floulis whose wine is now served at Katana and other restaurants of note. We enjoyed meeting sommelier to be, Alex Casella, the winemaker himself, charming Frenchman, Jean-Charles Boisset, as well as Heidi Peterson of La Sirena, Ignacio Delgadillo of Delgadillo Cellars, Amy Aiken of Meander and Michael Yates of Yates Family Vineyards.

The event is like non other, and Cornelius and his crew ran it like a Swiss Clock: efficient check in, easy and breezy processing and then onto the divine grape. Fort Mason Festival Hall was chock full of wine makers of all stripes, and although it was crowded, the crowd was easy to navigate, the participants friendly, and in the meet and greet spirit.

Show specials abound, with case discounts, wine club deals and deep discounts on bottles. There were some bottles in the reserve area that started at $200 a pop and you get to taste them all. Sadly I will not be able to go today, but you should really think about giving it a try. Sure you can go see the Runaways movie like I plan on doing later on today. Or you can spend this rainy day in a sunny place, The SF Vinter’s Market: Eclectic under the radar wineries, nice winemakers and attendees, and all around well-curated event. Bravo Cornelius Geary and team for putting on a show stopper. Well done!

Travel Note: Don’t drive in this crap, the #22 Fillmore will drop you off on Bay Street, two block from Fort Mason. Allow double time for traffic. 511.org says it takes 25 minutes to get there from Market St. but allow yourself at least 40 minutes. Or pile into a cab. But go. Even if you get there at 2 pm, you have 3 hours to do tastings, and that is plenty of time, believe me.

Details: Post 4.9.10

Hey Anti-Brides, tired of going out to Napa and Sonoma to taste wine for your wedding? Want to meet the winemakers? How about a hot date on a sunny Saturday in the Bay Area? Look no further than your own backyard: SF, lifestyle Mecca of the best food and wine in captivity. So throw on your boots, grab the mister and head on over to Fort Mason tomorrow. Cheers!

Tired of going to wine tasting events, discovering great new wines and then never being able to find them again? We were too. That’s why we created the San Francisco Vintners Market at Fort Mason Center April 10th to the 11th. This first of its kind wine tasting and buying event is a farmer’s market style shopping experience where wine enthusiasts can try and buy wines from over 200 wineries.

The San Francisco Vintners Market will feature top local wineries from Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Russian River Valley and other regional wineries plus imported wines from around the world. San Francisco Vintners Market features wine at all price points and styles including new releases, library collections and end-of-vintage selections-all available for immediate purchase. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to try and buy great wines at the San Francisco Vintners Market. Be there!

About

A New Kind of Wine Event with a Great Finish!

Introducing the San Francisco Vintners Market – the first and only wine tasting and buying event in the Bay Area. Over 200 wineries from Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Russian River Valley and beyond will be pouring their favorite wines including new releases, special collections and hard to find vintages for you to taste … and buy. No more racking your brain trying to remember the name of that great wine or wasting time trying to actually find a place that sells it. At the San Francisco Vintners Market you’ll be able to both try and buy.

At the San Francisco Vintners Market April 10th – 11th, wine buyers can connect with hundreds of wineries and taste and buy wines direct from the source.

The San Francisco Vintners Market was started by Cornelius Geary and Jeff Playter, Founders of Wine 2.0. With market conditions dire for many smaller wineries, Cornelius and Jeff realized the need for vintners to get even closer to their customers and offer their wines to larger audiences then can be found in small tasting rooms in wine country. So the idea was born to bring the tasting room to San Francisco and to help smaller brands find even more wine lovers in The City!
